On June 1 and 2, 2016, representatives from seven nonprofit refurbishers along with representative from the National Cristina Foundation established the Alliance for Technology Refurbishing and Reuse (AFTRR). Meetings were held over the two days at the Kramden Institute in Durham, North Carolina where attendees were provided a tour and an overview of Kramden’s refurbishing model by Michael Abensour, Executive Director.

The mission of AFTRR is to support the refurbishing and reuse nonprofit community to provide low-cost or free technology to those in need. Specifically:
AFTRR promotes networking, connections, knowledge-sharing and a sense of community among nonprofit technology refurbishers of all configurations
AFTRR advocates, through a common voice, the mission of nonprofit refurbishers and promotes a unified effort towards the goal of bridging the digital divide.
AFTRR creates collaborative relationships with national nonprofit strategic partners focusing on all issues related to the digital divide.
AFTRR members promote Best Practices by making a commitment to the core principles of nonprofit refurbishing, involving the process, measurement, reporting and setting of standards.
